Our donation will be used for the food supplies for the baskets this November. Each year, the Rotary donates about 150 baskets to those in need.

Montville Animal Welfare Initiative ($1,800) - This all-volunteer nonprofit serves Colchester, Bozrah, Salem, Montville, and the Mohegan Tribe to shelter and help care for animals so they can be rehomed. They support the Montville Animal Shelter, donate cat and dog food through Colchester Youth and Social Services, work with Safe Futures and local animal control, and offer low-cost nail trimming, microchip, and vaccination clinics to the community. This donation will go toward spay and neutering animals in the shelter to prepare them for adoption.

Senior Center Sewing Program ($1800) - A group of volunteers meets weekly at the Senior Center to sew and knit quilts, scarves, mittens, table runners, placemats and other items that are sold at the holiday craft fair to raise money for Senior Center programming. The group currently relies on donated sewing machines of various models and conditions, which makes teaching difficult and limits participation. This donation will allow the Senior Center to purchase matching sewing machines with automatic threading, making it easier to offer sewing classes and welcome new participants. The goal is to grow the program, bring more community members into the Senior Center, and continue supporting the town through their handmade work.]]>Tue, 21 Apr 2026 07:00:00 GMThttps://www.colchestercares.org/recipients/may-03rd-2026Bacon Academy Track & Field Team ($1,833) - Bacon Athletic Complex renovations have eliminated the team's ability to hold home meets and sell concessions - their primary fundraising source that typically generates $1,600 per season. The 75-member team now faces unexpected transportation costs to compete at other locations and needs to replace mismatched uniforms so all athletes can represent Colchester in matching attire. Funds will cover their end-of-year banquet, new uniforms, and transportation costs to competitive meets.

Historic Bacon Academy Restoration ($1,833) - This national and state historic landmark is being transformed into the hub of Colchester's future cultural arts district, but needs funds to be able to become fully ADA compliant, install two bathrooms, and run new sewer lines. This is part of the continued work for this 1803 building to serve as a community center offering classes, artistic displays, and rotating cultural history exhibits for all Colchester residents to enjoy.

Colchester History Museum Gardens Renovation ($1,833) - The Colchester Historical Society seeks to beautify the downtown historic district by renovating the Museum's gardens with three-season flowering shrubs, colorful perennials, and bulbs. The current aggressive ground cover is overtaking shrubs and wooden lattice work, detracting from this historic site's appearance. Funds will help with the purchase of new plants and shrubs to restore this community landmark.

Due to the government shut down, SNAP program benefits have ended and more Colchester families are using the Food Bank for support. The food bank provides food, personal hygiene items and other household supplies to those in need.

$1,900 to Colchester School Lunch Balances - Our donation has been given to Colchester Public Schools to help pay down outstanding student lunch balances that accumulates throughout the year. The money has been applied to the CPS Food Service Department "donation" account and will be applied to families/students who need support. 

$1,900 to Colchester Senior Center - Due to the government shutdown and suspended SNAP benefits, many seniors have faced food insecurity. The Senior Center is using this donation to purchase grocery store gift cards that will be distributed by the Senior Benefits Coordinator and Director of the Senior Center to those in need.

$1,600 to Colchester Hayward Volunteer Fire Company - our donation will directly support the Fire Company through sponsorship of their annual Golf Tournament in September. Colchester Cares will be a Lunch Sponsor and our donation will support the Fire Company's efforts in recruiting, retention, scholarships and maintenance of the Schuster Park training and event facility.

Our conation supports their costs which include uniform maintenance, ammunition, and rifle cleaning supplies.

Colchester Historical Society Living History Event ($1,461.66) - Colchester Historical Society is planning a community event called "Colchester, 1775: The Revolution is Coming!" set for June 7th on the town green. The event launches their participation in the nation's 250th Anniversary and will feature Revolutionary War reenactments, a horseback arrival of George Washington, and several other period-centric cultural events. Our donation will help cover their costs so this can be a free event for all.

Colchester Choir and Orchestra ($1,461.66) - The Colchester Choir & Orchestra is a Parks and Recreation program that started in 2001. With members ranging in age from 10 to 70, from students to professional music teachers, they offer 4 free concerts to the community every year. They solely rely on donations to support their amazing work. Benches for Soccer Fields ($1300) - Our donation will go to the Colchester Soccer Club - CSC to help fund sturdy benches for soccer field sidelines for home and away teams to use during games.

They run a health fair every year and create a resource guide that educates and informs seniors about valuable resources and services. They rely on donations to support any programs, speakers, etc. that support the community.

Senior Center Programs ($1,133) - The Colchester Senior Center holds 150-175 programs per month. These programs are not funded by tax dollars, so donations help cover instructor fees and program supplies to keep these programs affordable or when possible, free.

Colchester Baseball Softball League ($1,133) - The Cody Camp baseball field behind JJIS was built in 2010 in honor of a young boy who died of Burkitt's Lymphoma. The field conditions have deteriorated and require constant upkeep from parent volunteers. One of our town's great farms lost many of their outbuildings and greenhouses during the last storm that brought strong, damaging winds to Colchester. Our donation will aid in these repairs.

The EDC is a volunteer based group that works to promote the business and industrial resources of the town of Colchester. This includes bringing out of town patrons into Colchester businesses, and enticing new businesses to come to Colchester. The EDC does not currently have an operating budget.]]>
